Godard and Calvin Klein-Une Femme Mariee arrives from Koch Lorber...
French maestro Jean-Luc Godard flips the typical love triangle and confronts the manipulations of bourgeois society in one of his most noteworthy examinations of contemporary living, Une Femme Mariee. Chic, bobbed Charlotte (Macha Méril) pointlessly glides between clandestine lovemaking with the bohemian Robert (Bernard Noël) and banal everyday lifewith her condescenting spouse Pierre (Philippe Leroy). Unsure of whether she loves either man, Charlotte discovers she is pregnant and must come to terms with her feelings (or lack of) for both lovers.
It is fair to say that this film is a minor work of Godard and is certainly overshadowed by some of his other work during roughly the same mid-60’s period (Pierrot le Fou, Masculin feminine). However, this works in the viewer’s favor as there is a sense of discovering a lost work.
Unfortunately, there are no real extras here, but the film’s opening shows the odd influence the film has had on commercial advertising (particulary Calvin Klein style stuff). Doubly ironic since the film is critical of this kind of consumer mindset…
